“BIG BLACK BOOTS,
LONG BROWN HAIR,
SHE’S SO SWEET
WITH HER GET BACK STARE.”
One of my favourite rock bands earns today’s spot as my week of rock nears its end. If you were to scan my iPod you would find all of their albums amongst my song lists.
Formed in 2001 while brothers Nic and Chris Cester were still at school, Jet hit the Australian rock music scene in 2002 with the release of their original EP, Dirty Sweet. It had a limited print run of only 1,000 copies however due to demand the band went on to press 1,000 more copies. After signing with Elektra Records Dirty Sweet album was re-released in 2003.
Are You Gonna Be My Girl was the first single from their debut album, Get Born. It was whilst recording this album that the band got invited to play as support for the Australian leg of the Rolling Stones Tour. Performing over 200 shows this was the beginning of what became a ten year internationally successful career for the band.
Achieving chart success with many of their songs, Are You Gonna Be My Girl proved to be Jet’s most successful song from all their albums. Proof of the song’s popularity lies within its use. Included on the soundtracks for video games Madden NFL 2004, Guitar Hero On Tour and Rock Band. Used in various television shows such as Strictly come dancing (also known as Dancing with the stars) as well as in the film What happens in Vegas. The song received worldwide recognition when it became the international song for phone company, Vodafone and Apple iPod’s/iMAc worldwide advertisement campaigns.
Jet actively supported the Australian music scene and charities. Paying tribute to Fred Hollows in 2008 the band released a video clip with images complied by The Fred Hollows Foundation to their hit song “Shine On” encouraging people to make a donation to the charity and keep Fred’s work going. The band also supported the Sound Relief concerts in support of the Victorian Bushfire Crisis Red Cross fundraiser in 2009. Holding simultaneous concerts at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Melbourne Cricket Ground Jet and Wolfmother were the only bands to board flights and perform at both venues.
After touring and supporting some of Australia’s and the worlds most successful bands, much to the disappointment of their fans the band announced their split in 2012.
