Second Life’s 11th birthday party kicked off on the 22nd. Having worked behind the scenes for the past couple of weeks I eagerly awaited the stages and events to open for the public.
Like the years before, each birthday celebration has its own unique theme. Embracing the ideals of the quote from Winston Churchill, “The empires of the future are the empires of the Mind”, Birthday 11 is no different with all the stages having an industrial futuristic feel.
This year I have the honor and privilege to be working the Live Stage at Astonish. With giant hands outstretched offering the world the music from within, this stage is an impressive build. Creator, Aki Shichiroji, has not only managed to design a usable stage for the live events calendar of SLB11, but also created a sense of mystery and wonder at what lies beyond the tall skyscraper pillar surrounds.
The differing heights of your surrounds add a realist three dimensional effect. Whilst steam vent take you to a place in the future where robots and machinery could walk among us.
The masked face, is it friend or is it foe? Right now she has been nothing but friendly to all of us who walk and work around her, although we have shared private laughs that with hands that large, a small city would disappear within a single clap.
One of the roles I have most enjoyed during my time inside Second Life is that of Stage Manager for the Second Life birthday party events. I get to work within a fabulous team of people who quickly become new friends. There is also a great sense of personal and group satisfaction as we assist the performers to bring their special talents to the stage for all residents to enjoy.
So I invite you to make the time to visit all the stages, not just the live stage at Astonish. Enjoy the music on offer as we wish Second Life a Happy 11th year.
These birthday celebrations require a large amount of volunteer effort. From the dedicated people who organize and oversee the entire event to those residents who put their hand up to be greeters; assistants; stage managers; leads; moderators; exhibitors and performers.
From the top of the chain to the bottom, many involved in SLB work grueling hours to ensure the event is a success. So send out a hello and give a bit of a smile to all those you see wandering around wearing staff ti-shirts or badges. We love our jobs and enjoy nothing more than seeing those from around the grid having a great time.
